A one-minute video overview about the Y-Wing, its powers, abilities and characteristics as depicted in the canon Star Wars movies, and expanded universe.
The Y-wing starfighter was deployed as a fighter-bomber by the Rebel Alliance. With its resilient, heavy shielding - it was designed to dogfight its way to an objective and deliver a large payload of high explosives.
(The Y-Wing had 50% more shielding than the X-Wing)
The onboard weaponry included two laser cannons, two ion cannons, and two proton torpedo launchers, as well as being capable of holding a heavy proton torpedo payload. The Y-wing also had the unique ability to paralyze another starship with the use of its ion cannons without destroying it. An astromech droid, such as an R2 unit, could be plugged into a socket behind the cockpit to act as a co-pilot, as well as manage the ship's various systems.
(After the battle of Yavin, the B-wing was created as the Y-wings intended replacement)
Though one of the largest of the Rebel Starfighters a being well armored, the Y-wing was slow and not as maneuverable as other Alliance fighters. The design had many flaws, and required ongoing, heavy maintenance. Despite it’s shortcomings, the Y-wing was capable of standing its ground during a dogfight and helped the alliance secure many battles, including the battle of Yavin and battle of endor.
