Conservationists recently recorded footage of a Yunnan snub-nosed monkey giving birth to her baby in the southwest China province.
The conservationists said that she showed signs of going into labor on the morning of Feb. 24 near Baima Snow Mountain.
The clip shows the female monkey moving about restlessly, after which a male monkey goes to groom her. Soon a group of females gathers around her, as if they were creating a “delivery room” for her.
After giving birth to the baby, another monkey snatches the baby, only to be chased down by the mother. The child, now safely snuggled in his mother’s long arms, has had quite a day.
Also known as black snub-nosed monkeys, these primates are an endangered species who live mostly in China.
Their population now ranges in the thousands compared with that in the 1980s, when they were close to extinction.
