THE TUDOR SUBMARINER REF. 94110

The Tudor Submariner you see here in our video is quite exceptional because it comes to us straight from the original owner. It was obviously very well-loved, meaning it has taken on some desirable signs of aging and wear through the years.

BRIEF TUDOR 94110 HISTORY

Tudor introduced their first Oyster Prince Submariner in 1954, shortly after their parent company Rolex released their similarly-named Submariner. Initially, it had water resistance up to 100 meters/330 feet, an automatic Fleurier movement, and an older-style Plexiglas crystal.

It also utilized the Rolex Oyster case, Rolex Oyster bracelet, and Rolex screw-down crown.

It featured many Rolex components and an outsourced movement to offer the same exceptional quality as Rolex but at a much more affordable price point.

Tudor released ref. 9411/0, and its dateless counterpart ref. 94010/1, in the 1970s. They were similar to their date and no date predecessors but with upgraded ETA movements.

They also boast higher quality dials than the 70XX generation that preceded them.

It’s important to note that this generation would be the last of the Tudor Submariners to feature the iconic “Snowflake” hands with square tips before being recently resurrected.


THE DIAL

Tudor produced ref. 94110 with black or blue dials. Our example features a very desirable blue dial, much like the Tudor Submariners commissioned by the French Navy/Marine Nationale in the 1970s.

The square and baton-shaped hour markers and Snowflake hands are filled with Tritium lume that has since aged to a charming, buttery patina through the years, but it is otherwise in excellent condition.


THE BEZEL

On the other hand, the bezel has aged considerably more than the dial, taking on an almost lavender hue. Ask any luxury watch enthusiast, and they will tell you that this aspect of the watch only adds to its desirability and vintage charm.

As a dive watch at heart, the bezel also features 60-minute graduations for timing decompression stops and other diving times.


THE CASE

Our example was produced in 1980. The stainless steel case appears to have been polished at some point. It also features a case back engraved with “Original Oyster Case By Rolex Geneva” to signify that it was, in fact, produced by Rolex.

The case also features Rolex’s famous Triplock screw-down crown, with three waterproof zones and the iconic 5-point Rolex coronet logo.

It boasts waterproofness up to 200 meters/660 feet and a plastic crystal.


THE BRACELET

Our example also features the Rolex three-piece link 93150 Oyster bracelet with 11 links and 580 end links. It also boasts a convenient diver’s extension clasp.

The back of the clasp is stamped "VC," telling us it was produced in 1979.


THE MOVEMENT

Finally, ref. 9411/0 utilizes the 25-jewel ETA cal. 2784 automatic movement. It boasts hacking seconds, which stops the seconds hand while setting the time. This function allows for more precise time setting.

The caliber 2784 also includes a Quickset function, a feature many modern collectors might take for granted. The Quickset allows the wearer to adjust the date mechanism with a simple twist of the crown instead of twisting it until the hour hand advances past midnight.

Overall, this example of the vintage Tudor Submariner ref. 94110 is in honest, vintage condition.
