Why the heck are there two Dakotas?
Even the people who live in these states don't know why they're separated. But fear not, because we're here to give you the real scoop.
The ever-clever answer of "one just wasn't enough." But believe it or not, there's actually a more legitimate reason why the Dakota territory was split in two.
You see, back in the day, the United States government decided to create a territory called Dakota. And since they couldn't decide whether to name it after the North or the South, they just went with Dakota.
The Dakota Territory was created by the United States government in 1861, during the American Civil War. At the time, it included present-day North Dakota, South Dakota, and parts of Montana and Wyoming.
