Reelin’ In The Years by Steely Dan
.
This song features an instantly recognisable intro and solo by the brilliant session guitarist Elliott Randall. Jimmy Page is reported to have said that this is his favourite guitar solo of all time and you can hear why. As an added bonus the interlude of the song features an almost Celtic twin lead section played by equally brilliant Jeff ’Skunk’ Baxter; that’s a LOT of guitar solos for one song!
.
Matching the very unique guitar tones took a bit of research into the gear used on the sessions. I initially thought it was a DI guitar sound with the desk preamp gain dialled up due to amount of fizzy top end on the track but it turns out he plugged into an Ampeg SVT bass amp! The UAD SVT model with the cabinet emulation turned off seemed to approximate the sound along with some eq tweaks from the excellent FabFilter Pro-Q tone matching EQ.

Gear Used:
Gibson 2016 ES-335 ’59 Reissue. Neck pup.
Fender Custom Shop ‘51 Reissue Telecaster. Neck pup (but I SHOULD have used the bridge!)
UA Apollo Twin:
Ampeg SVTR Classic. Bright channel. Full volume and treble with no bass. Input gain dialled up. Cab emulation turned off.
FabFilter Pro-Q: 5dB Boost at 65hz, 200hz, 1.1KHz and 7.KHz.
EMT 140 Plate reverb. Very small amount.
