"What happened was that the Jews (the Israeli army) entered and took us out of the area to Al-Mawasi (coastal area). The house was full and we left all our things here and we went out with only our clothes and when they said the road was open we came and found the house demolished. We had noone, my father was martyred and we are only six women at home and we do not know where to go or where to stay."

STORYLINE:
Palestinians returned to the southern city of Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip on Monday to salvage what they could from the destroyed buildings that remained, a day after the Israeli military announced it was withdrawing troops from the area.
Many came back to the Gaza Strip’s second-largest city to find their former hometown unrecognisable.
"Where do I sleep? Where do I go," said an elderly member of the Sahloul family.
With scores of buildings destroyed or damaged, piles of rubble now sit where apartments and businesses once did.
Streets have been bulldozed.
Schools and hospitals were also damaged by the fighting.
"We came and found the house demolished," Khan Younis resident, Heba Sahloul, told The Associated Press.
"My father was martyred and we are only six women at home and we do not know where to go or where to stay," Heba Sahloul added.
Israel sent troops to Khan Younis in December, part of its blistering ground offensive that came in response to a Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7 into southern Israel where 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed and roughly 250 people taken hostage.
The war, now in its seventh month, has killed more than 33,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to local health authorities, displaced most of the territory’s 2.3 million people and left vast swaths of the beleaguered Gaza Strip uninhabitable.
