In the Battle of Tours near Poitiers, France, Charles Martel, a Christian Frankish leader, triumphed over a large army of Spanish Moors, putting a stop to the Muslim advance into Western Europe. Abd-ar-Rahman, the Muslim governor of Cordoba, perished in the battle, and the Moors withdrew from Gaul, never returning in such strength.
Charles, the illegitimate son of Pepin, who was the influential mayor of the palace of Austrasia and the de facto ruler of the Frankish kingdom, seized power after Pepin's death in 714. He expanded Frankish territory and successfully repelled a Muslim assault in 732.
The victory at Tours secured the Carolingian dynasty's rule in Martel's family. His son, Pepin, became the first Carolingian king of the Franks, while his grandson, Charlemagne, went on to establish a vast empire that spanned across Europe.
