The European Parliament has voted to limit the use of biofuels. MEPs say that by 2020 no more than 6 percent of all transport fuel in the EU should come from biofuels made from organic sources such as plants and animal by-products. VoR's Daniel Cinna hosts an animated debate on this contentious issue.
MEPs say they are also concerned that the production of such fuels is pushing up food prices and damages the environment. Advocates say that biofuels are a clean renewable source of energy and can be significantly cheaper than other fossil fuels. Although they're considered to be more sustainable than fossil fuels like oil and gas, the European Parliament now says the production of biofuels is linked to deforestation.
