Chinese and Russian naval ships on Friday conducted a joint submarine rescue drill in the Sea of Okhotsk, the first such drill during the ongoing second-phase "Joint Sea-2017" military exercises.
China and Russia each sent out a submarine rescue ship to locate and evacuate crew from a presumably wrecked submarine belonging to the Russian Navy. Russia's "Igor Belousov" drilled first. It lowered its deep submergence rescue vessel AC-40 for the rescue mission.
China's "Changdao" followed suit with its LR-7 deep submergence rescue vessel for the same drill.

Four Chinese sailors operated the rescue vessel which dived, located and docked with the submarine in about an hour.
"We were swept by currents to dozens of meters from our designated diving location. Surface instruction has helped us back onto target location. Imaging sonar located the submarine. We first approached the aft and then moved toward the bow along its deck. We soon located the docking platform and we maneuvered up for the docking which went without a hitch," said Chen Jiabi, one of the four operators on the rescue vessel.
Friday's joint submarine rescue drill was hailed as facilitating interoperability between the Chinese and Russian navies and boosting exchanges and cooperation between the military forces of the two countries.
