The heart is a pump with 4 chambers, and there are valves between the chambers to direct blood flow. In the normal heart, we hear the S1 and S2 sounds as lub dub cadence, and these are related to the closure of the valves-the first heart sound, or “S1,” is produced when the tricuspid and mitral valves close at the beginning of systole. The second heart sound, or “S2,” is produced when the semilunar valves close at the beginning of diastole. In this short clip, we review the conditions producing the systolic and diastolic murmurs. The associated images show the nature of the murmurs-for example, the crescendo-decrescendo murmur in Aortic stenosis (ejection systolic murmur), the pan-systolic murmur in mitral and tricuspid regurgitation (MR and TR) and the continuous murmur heard in PDA.
