In this sequence from "The Innocence the musical", First Lieutenant Elliot Tyler, played by L. Steven Taylor, is helping Alma, an Estonian war refugee, smuggle a six-year-old Jewish boy to Paris. Though he was wounded during an act of incredible bravery, Elliot has just been released from duty with a "blue discharge", which is neither honorable or dishonorable, because Elliot is black. It also means that he will receive no pension and no official recognition for his bravery in WWII.
