The Little Bird was initially built as a reconnaissance helicopter for Army armored troops, but it has been virtually exclusively used by the special operations community since the early 1980s.
It has a range of 250 nautical miles without fuel. The small attack helicopter AH-6 Little Bird Gun has been tested and verified in action. Armed with guns, Hellfire missiles, and a 2.75-inch FFAR, this helicopter supports ground and air special operations with armed assistance. The AH-6's range without refueling is 250 nautical miles. All of these variants had a single Allison T-63 252 SHP engine.
