During a March 2019 expedition in Raja Ampat, Indonesia we encountered these two playful Bryde’s whales and watched them surface and rest for more than an hour. At one point the whales surfaced within feet of the bow! Luckily, our accompanying researchers from Planet Deep had their new Mavic Pro 2 (drone) high above to capture this footage.
This encounter took place during a 12-day private expedition aboard the luxurious El Aleph organized by Oceanic Society in partnership with Planet Deep for a group of friends from the United States. Beyond daily snorkeling, our expedition had an onboard whale expert. A portion of our days is spent looking for, identifying, and monitoring cetaceans to help better understand how whales use the waterways within Raja Ampat.
