Pianist - Josef Bulva

Chopin, a lifelong patriot in exile, was driven by the memories of his homeland and, as a result, gained much of his artistic inspiration from homesickness. In the 5th polonaise we hear tragic storms of emotion followed by the unmistakable polonaise rhythm resembling a drum roll. The rising trills in the left hand convey a sense of endless longing and defeat while the technical bravura seems to communicate Chopin’s glorious view of his homeland. The polonaise is overwhelming.

During the middle section one can hear a comforting mazurka in the distance, however it is not long before the thunderous octaves return followed by the polonaise.

Bulva shows remarkable octave technique in this piece along an infallible sense of rhythm. It takes a great deal of restraint to not wave ones arms around to the strong rhythmic pulse during both the polonaise and mazurka sections.
