With beginner students, instructors love their lesson horses enough to keep their students’ hands as quiet as possible. But at some point the riders need to learn to “pick up” the reins and “carry” their horses to advance in their horsemanship. This presentation will discuss various topics key to that transition; how to ride on correct contact; what’s the difference between a leading, direct, and indirect rein; how to communicate with the horse through all of the aids and not just steering them with the hands.
