Black Grace brings its distinct style of “exhilarating, seemingly inexhaustible energy” (The New York Times) to the United States again for its international tour of 2022. Founding Artistic Director, Neil Ieremia (ONZM), who “has spread his artistic roots in several rich pasts and grown up and out into a sunlight of his own making”, has curated a program of three distinct works, including a reimagining of Vivaldi’s Gloria; a piece inspired by renowned Samoan visual artist Fatu Feu’u; and a new rendition of the iconic work Handgame (1995), which utilizes aspects of traditional fa’ataupati (Samoan slap dance) and sasa (seated dance) to create live body percussion.
Bringing together a company featuring some of New Zealand’s finest contemporary and traditional Pacific dancers, Ieremia will share his unique ability to pack the “raw visceral power of a primal communal rite into a carefully constructed form of rigor and sophistication” (The Boston Globe).
