Senin Annen bir melekti Yavrum/ Your mother was an angel, Baby
Exhibition at Merdiven Art Space. 19. October - 19. November 2021
Artist: Kezban Arca Batıbeki
Curator: Merih Akoğul
The art works are based on the cinema photographs of Kezban Arca Batıbeki's mother, Nurhan Nur, a legendary Filmstar. Her father is Atif Yılmaz, a famous cinema director. The parents life, who passed away a couple of years ago, was shaped by Turkish cinema.
In most of the artist's works, the viewer seems to be navigating through a movie trailer accompanied by familiar emotions: Wrapped in loneliness, longings, dreams and the melancholy of sadness.
The inner journey of the artist's mother, Nurhan Nur, with her mind and body between the past/present, and the emotional metaphors between mother and daughter, of contemporary shots made with costumes and poses that refer to real film stills, constitute the starting point of the exhibition. Also in the exhibition, different works such as paintings, space installations and video installations in which Nur uses selected samples from the photonovels that took the place of cinema in Turkey for a period, are the works of two different generations; explores their perspectives on their era through photography, video, installations and new technology.
