Test the effectiveness of your water filtration system by measuring the Total Dissolved Solids contained in your drinking water compared to that of normal tap water.
TDS is an abbreviation for Total Dissolved Solids in a liquid, including organic and inorganic substances. TDS is directly related to quality of water, generally the lower a TDS figure, the more pure the water. As an example, reverse osmosis or RO purified water will have a TDS between 0 and 15, whereas tap water will vary between 100 and 1300, depending on where you live in the world. Fresh water can be classified as less than 1500 mg/L TDS, brackish as between 1500 to 5000 mg/L TDS, and saline water as more than 5000 mg/L TDS
Sources for TDS can include:
Plant matter, silt, industrial waste and sewage
Metals or plastic from piping (lead and copper)
Fertilizer and pesticide runoff from agriculture
Inorganic materials such as nitrogen, iron, phosphorus, sulfur, bicarbonates, salts and other metals
