Only 1.2 % of all children in Indian villages want to continue with farming. The time is critical when we have to re-think how we are raising our children and what are we teaching in our schools. Climate crisis, poverty and hunger, farmers’ distress, ecological destruction and many other global issues are a future threat to us. And if we are serious about dealing with them, it has to start right from the beginning, right from the primary education. Because if we wait for them to get older and then act, it will be too late, it is already too late.
Ashita Nath, co-founder of The Good Harvest School. A school dedicated to teach sustainable agriculture in classroom. The school acts as a model where girls are taught to make right choices and act responsibly right from the start. She is a qualified teacher with an experience of 10 years. She has been involved in various social projects including working with street kids and setting up a home for rescued children. In 2016, she and her husband founded a school in rural Unnao (UP) with an aim to provide good education to rural girls for free. One of the things they focus on is introducing agriculture as a main subject right from the beginning. The Good Harvest School is a collective effort to help young girls from farming community to stand abreast with the rest of the world.
