After nearly 35 years of living and teaching on the mainland/continent, Patrick Kirch returned home to Hawai‘i in 2019 to teach at the University of Hawai‘i. Reestablishing five-decade-old connections on Moloka‘i, he launched a new research project on traditional Hawaiian agricultural sustainability. In his talk, Kirch will reflect on what it has been like to return home, as or the French say, plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.
Patrick V. Kirch is Professor of Anthropology at UH Mānoa, and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. Born and raised in Hawai‘i, Kirch received his PhD from Yale, worked for a decade at the Bishop Museum, and then taught at UC Berkeley for 25 years. He specializes in the archaeology and historical anthropology of Hawai‘i and the Pacific islands.
