This little piece by Chopin uses a very famous theme as its' basis - that of the stretta for Angelina's final rondo - and elaborates it in a most pleasing and endearing manner. The four variations are unusually framed with the theme itself which returns in unvaried form at the end of the work, as if to suggest to the listener to return to the roots of the music. The variations themselves include a particularly moving obligatory minor setting of the main theme that forms the centerpiece of the work, while the other sections are typically showy with the flute chirping happily over the bass line of the piano.
Jean-Pierre Rampal is the soloist here, and his performance is very much delightful. Hope you'll enjoy :).
