The Blacksmith (II)
Ivan Franko
Translation: Maxim Tarnawsky and
Uliana Pasicznyk
A village lies in the valley,
A fog hangs over the village.
And on the hill near the village
Stands an old stonework smithy.
In the smithy stands a blacksmith
With a warm and open heart,
As he hammers he’ll be singing,
Calling all to his workshop.
“Come, my friends from home and field!
A better fate is being forged here.
Come one and all! Come early!
Escape the fog that surrounds you!”
But the haze does not move,
It thickens above the village,
It spreads over the fields,
To obscure the path to the smithy.
To confuse the people who strive
To climb up the hill from the valley
To the smithy, where the forge produces
Gleaming weapons instead of heavy chains.
Yet another depiction of the blacksmith at work.
Originally, Ivan Franko conceived this poem as a call
to liberation of the Ukrainian people. Stepovyi’s setting
of the text, however, has been interpreted in communist
terms as a call to socialist revolution. Musically, even
the vocal line mimics the blacksmith’s hammer, with its
melodic ostinatos. The hammer with the sickle was a
powerful Soviet symbol.
Le forgeron (II)
Ivan Franko
Traduction: Marta Horban
sowjetisches Symbol.
