A Texas law passed in May took effect on Wednesday, effectively making it almost impossible for a woman to be able to get an abortion in the state.
The law makes it illegal to end a pregnancy once a fetal heartbeat is heard—usually at about six weeks and before some women even know they're pregnant. A request had been made to the U.S. Supreme Court to block the law, but late Wednesday it declined to do so allowing the law to go ahead.
The law has drawn anger not only in the state but across the country as abortion advocates are concerned it could be the latest attempt in an effort to limit or overturn the landmark Roe v Wade Supreme Court case that legalized abortion in all 50 states.
Some are also concerned other states could model bills after Texas', which was worded in a way that will make it more difficult to bring before the courts. The bill bars enforcement by state officials, which are normally the people named in lawsuits, and instead allows private citizens to sue anyone who helps someone get an abortion.
