Byron Cherry, along with longtime friend John Schneider, auditioned for the part of Bo Duke for Dukes of Hazzard. Schneider ended up winning the part, but a few years later, due to merchandising conflicts, Schneider and co-star Tom Wopat walked out on the show, and Cherry, along with Christopher Mayer, were called in to replace them as Coy and Vance Duke.
Christopher Mayer, AKA Chip Mayer, portrayed Vance Duke on The Dukes of Hazzard for 19 episodes during season 5 when cousins Coy and Vance Duke temporarily replaced Bo and Luke Duke (due to a salary dispute between producers and the original actors).
Sonny Shroyer is known for his role as Deputy Sheriff Enos Strate. He also starred in the short-lived spin-off series Enos based around his Dukes of Hazzard character. Shroyer is married and has two sons, Chris and Mark.
Ben Jones is best known for his role as Cooter Davenport. Jones also served for four years in the United States House of Representatives from January 3, 1989 to January 3, 1993. Since the 1990s, Jones has run a chain of "Cooter's museums" across the U.S., dedicated to The Dukes of Hazzard. "Cooter's Place" currently has locations in Tennessee and Virginia.[2] Jones also monetizes his television role through his band, Cooter's Garage Band, and events such as Hazzard Run and Cooter's Shenandoah Jamboree.
Sorrell Booke is best known for his role as corrupt politician Jefferson Davis "Boss" Hogg. Sadly, by the time spin-offs were created, Booke had died, and the character of Boss Hogg was also said to be deceased.
James Best is known as Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane. He appeared during the entire run of the program, from 1979 until the end of the series in 1985. He later revealed that the caricature-like persona of Sheriff Coltrane was developed from a voice he used when playing with his young children. On set, Best was particularly close to Sorrell Booke. The two actors became close friends; and according to interviews by the series' creators, the two often improvised their scenes together, making up their own dialogue as they went along. Until his death, he also remained close to Catherine Bach.
Denver Pyle's best-known and longest-running television role was that of Uncle Jesse Duke. In his later life, Pyle played mostly cameo television roles and retired from full-time acting. His last film role was in the 1994 film Maverick. His last known acting role was as Jesse Duke in the 1997 CBS made-for-television movie The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion!
Catherine Bach heard about the audition for Daisy Duke through her husband. When she arrived there, she found the producers were looking for a Dolly Parton-lookalike; despite not looking like what they were searching for, she was hired on the spot. Bach had concerns about the appropriateness of her cut-off shorts at first, saying she could not wear them in a restaurant scene. At the suggestion of the show's producers, Bach posed as Daisy Duke for a poster, which sold 5 million copies. While she was starring on The Dukes of Hazzard, her legs were insured for $1,000,000.
John Schneider won the role of Bo Duke at 18. For his audition, he "borrowed a dilapidated pickup truck, put on a big ol' country accent and funky hat. I hadn't shaved and went in toting a beer. I don't know whether they believed it or not, but they liked it." Schneider learned to drive the iconic Dodge Charger in the show, but to the disappointment of many fans, he admitted he never jumped the car due to the dangerous nature of the stunt. In 1982, a tangle of legal suits with the producers over the distribution of merchandising royalties sent Schneider and co-star Tom Wopat leaving the show for most of a season. They returned to their roles in February 1983, only after their claims were satisfied. Schneider directed the series finale, titled Opening Night at the Boar's Nest.
Tom Wopat first achieved fame as Lucas K. "Luke" Duke. Since then, Wopat has worked regularly, most often on the stage in musicals and in supporting television and movie roles.
