(19 Nov 1994) Chinese President Jiang Zemin arrived in Vietnam on Saturday
(19/11) for talks which could set the seal on the improving, but
still sensitive, relationship between Asia's two biggest communist
states. Since normalising relations in 1991 after more than a
decade of hostility, they have argued periodically over oil
drilling rights and territory in the South China Sea, which
Vietnam calls the Eastern Sea, including the Spratly Islands.
Hanoi has given no hint to what extent such disputes will figure
in Jiang's talks from Sunday until Tuesday. The accent in
pre-visit commentaries was on cooperation.
