(12 Jun 2012) Ukrainian football fans watching their team's opening game against Sweden celebrated their victory in the fan zone in central Kiev on Monday night.
Ukraine entered the tournament as a massive underdog to make it to the second round, but looks to have a real chance of extending its stay past the group stage as France and England drew 1-1 in their game earlier on Monday.
Ukrainian player Andriy Shevchenko, 35, is determined to turn the European Championship into a farewell performance to remember, and so far he's putting on quite a show.
He one-upped Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a battle of past and present star strikers, scoring two great headers to give co-host Ukraine a 2-1 win over Sweden.
While the jubilant Ukrainians were dancing and singing in the streets of their capital, Swedish fans didn't seem too disheartened.
"Congratulations Ukraine, you did it. And please, bit England and France and we will see you in the final," said Mariush, a Swedish fan, after the game.
Ukraine plays France in their next match while England will take on Sweden.
