S00E05

In the spirit of sharing your work as you progress, here's another street photography POV video. This time coming from the streets of Berlin, where I spent a couple of days to walk around, take photos and drink beers.

I also started talking to myself while taking photos, to share my thoughts as I'm photographing. It felt kinda weird to talk out loud like that but maybe that's just because I knew I was being recorded. I'd be lying if I'd say I don't narrate my photo-walks for myself when I'm alone (I mean, who *doesn't* talk to themselves every now and then?). I still struggle with speaking in coherent sentences when I'm also focussing on making photographs so I'm mostly just mumbling and stumbling over my words. I'll do better soon.

For this video, I only used the built-in microphone from the DJI Action 2 to record audio so there's more wind noise then I'd like there to be and even when there isn't, you can't really hear me all too good as well since the mic is so weak and placed in an awkward position. It's a little tiring to listen to, I admit, but it's the best I have right now. I'm looking at options to improve this in the future but for now, at least you get an idea of my thoughts when I'm out there.

Also, I personally like when these POV videos show you a little more context and not just jump from photo to photo. Therefore, some of these shots are quite lengthy and show how I'm walking from one photo to the next. I think it's rather nice to be able to see a little more of the surroundings and get an idea of how I pick the things worth photographing (or miss out on good compositions). I also understand if I may have overdone it here and there. Feel free to let me know what you prefer in the comments!

Finally, I have not made this a point of focus before, but most of the photos you see in my videos are Fujifilm JPEGs with a little bit of editing in Lightroom for contrast. I realize I could center entire videos around this but to me, it's just a part of my workflow that I like to keep as quick and easy as possible. It also pushes me to be a better photographer when I'm out there and not rely as much on saving shots in post. Anyway, here's the Fujifilm Film Simulation Recipe that I use:

Classic Negative
Dynamic Range: DR400
Highlight: -2
Color Chrome Effect: Strong
Color Chrome Effect Blue: Weak
White Balance: AUTO

That's it! I fiddled around with most of the settings at various points of time but this 'near stock' look has really grown on my lately. It can look amazing in good light and a little meh in suboptimal lighting conditions. Historically, I would try to save those meh photos by giving them a heavily stylized edit but that only hides the meh-ness of the picture a little bit. A meh photo will still be a meh photo. all the more reason to be a better photographer and learn to recognize good light!

To conclude, these are the things I'm still working on:
- Improve audio quality.
- Talk in more coherent sentences.
- Start the videocamera earlier so the first half of my sentences don't get cut off and you don't jump into the action in a weird way.
- Shoot better and more B-roll.
- So far I've only managed to make the action camera footage look okay-ish. Need to figure out how to improve that.
