Award Category:
Best Multi-Use Parking
Description:
The Hewlett Packard Parking Garage accommodates 2,055 cars. Hewlett Packard Enterprise Corporate Campus also includes 440,000 sq. ft. of office space. The general contractor D.E. Harvey Builders and developer Patrinely Group brought Legacy Precast on board early in the Design Development phase of the project to assist in reducing cost, schedule, and maintaining design intent.
The Design Architect was Pickard Chilton from New Haven CT and Executive Architect was Kirksey Architecture in Houston and the EOR was Cardno.
Prior to the kickoff meetings with the design team, Huss Sinjari with Legacy Precast engaged CEG International as the precast specialty engineer for the project. Not your run-of-the-mill project, this Hewlett Packard parking garage included an elevated cooling tower with massive loads, concrete projections on all spandrels, two expansion joints, and enclosed conditioned space for the central plant, controls rooms, generator room, mailroom, shipping, and receiving. At four bays wide, the seven-level structure with 583,000 sq. ft. of suspended double tees and 1,791 pieces of precast/prestressed concrete was delivered and erected 30 days ahead of schedule and within budget by Legacy Precast LLC from Brookshire, Texas.
Project timeline:
From design development in 2019, Legacy Precast and CEG International were involved early on with D.E. Harvey Builders and the entire team to design, manufacture, and install the all-precast concrete building system. The contract was inked in 2020, with installation complete in March of 2021 and the campus is on schedule to be occupied in 2022. Dr. Larbi Sennour, Meiling Chen, and Patrick Rodd with CEG International, a PCMA Associate Member, were an integral part of the process from start to finish.
Key design features:
-Design a massive, elevated cooling tower system with dead loads up to 4,495 kips or 4,495,000 pounds and live loads up to 1,230 kips or 1,230,000 pounds.
-The system included five-foot deep transfer beams, substantial columns, solid slabs, and NMB Splice Sleeves.
-Meeting the architect’s design requirements of numerous wide vertical reveals and C Shaped Spandrels with 4” form projections were not an issue. Legacy Precast called on Hamilton Form, a PCMA Associate Member to assist with developing a cost-effective solution.
-At over 650 feet in length, the project included two expansion joints, grand stair/elevator lobbies with a glass canopy system. and a post applied architectural screen on the courtyard side of the project.
-Typical precast products and systems, such as field-topped double tees provide for a uniform and consistent field. installed concrete topping by the contractor and superior drainage, which eliminated over 105,000 lineal feet of caulking and maintenance of double tee joints for the owner. In addition, the field-topped double tee system improves the user experience for a smooth ride by eliminating bumps every twelve feet.
Innovations or accomplishments using precast:
By utilizing precast concrete and teaming with Legacy Precast early in the process, the developer, contractor, architect, and EOR was able to control costs by simplifying the overall Hewlett Packard Parking Garage structure, providing enclosure/screening of the cooling tower on level three and meet the aggressive schedule for installation without compromising design intent.
Precast concrete components:
862 double tees
137 spandrels
194 walls
131 vertical ramp walls
193 beams
99 shear walls
89 columns
48 stairs
38 slabs
