Every now and again, amazingly surprising things are found when you least expect them to appear. Last summer, while exploring some fairly thick woods in the least suspecting small Cleveland, Ohio suburb of Wickliffe, we came upon a conundrum of a building, close to an old seminary school: a barn (or so we surmised) made almost completely out of concrete, save for the roof and inner walls and bracings. The structure appeared to be very old, at least going back to the turn of the last century, judging by the type and syle of the concrete used. Was this a part of the old Coulby estate, once owned by a local wealthy family, left to brood in the woods a half mile or so from the still standing and preserved Coulby Mansion (now city hall!). Did it once belong to a farmer in a time when Wickliffe was just a small unknown little dot on a large rural map? Was it a barn at all, or something else that we couldn't identify? Was it the urban legendary "haunted priest school" that we had heard local kids talk about daring each other to go to late at night? What we could tell was this: It had been used for storage most recently, judging by all of the random bric-a-brac we found on the basement level, and most definitely as a hang-out for local kids looking to drink, smoke and spray-paint whatever crudity flooded out of their adolescent minds onto the old cement walls. What could this mystery structure be? The jury is still out, and we're hoping that perhaps someone that sees this video may have some idea or a historical tale to tell to clear up that mystery.
This kind of place is what drives me to step off of the beaten path so often to see what's just beyond sight of "normal." You just never know what historical oddity or local forgotten treasure may reward you for your efforts! Enjoy the brief tour and feel free to share any info on the site in the comments below! -Mr. P.
