Robert Siev was thirteen when he and his family received visas that saved their lives and allowed them to escape Nazi occupied Lithuania and flee to Shanghai. Although Sugihara had been instructed not to issue the visas, he did so anyway and thus saved an estimated 6,000 people.
This interview was conducted in 2006 by Caitlyn Hynes, then thirteen, as a media supplement for her National History Day exhibition on Chiune Sugihara. As such, it was cut to its current length to meet NHD guidelines. The project won first place at the district and county levels and was a co-champion at the California state competition. It placed 10th in the Junior Exhibition category at the national competition in Maryland in 2006.
