3 things to do before you start retirement planning:

1. Calculate your Expenses: 
What % of your expenses can be your retirement expenses. This gives you an idea about your monthly expenses.

2. Expected Returns (on your existing investments) during your retirement: There might be some investments you would have already planned or started like Pension schemes, SWP and others. Take an estimated return % those investments would be giving during your retirement years. Say 8-10% pa.

3. Desired Retirement Age: While these days a lot of people are working don’t want to retire and want to keep working, doing things you like doing. But remember that it's not important that everything will generate income.
