For my presentation, I decided to interpret the work of Jim Goldberg. Goldberg has showcased his work in many different exhibitions including shows at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Most of his work has an Ethically Evaluative approach and tackles social topics including power struggles, lower class hardships, and happiness. The images I have chosen to interpret are from his collection titled “Rich and Poor”. These images show the broad range in which different people live different lives and highlight the struggles attached to them.
Jim Goldberg’s work has opened my eyes to a side of photography that has a bigger purpose aside from pleasuring the viewer. The Ethically Evaluative approach taken in his work is the type of photography that has always been of interest to me. His success has shown me how we can tackle and address social issues without always speaking it in simple terms. Leaving the images up for interpretation allows viewers to create their own opinions and begin their own journey on enacting social change.
