STORYLINE
Israel launched two new air strikes against targets in central Gaza early on Tuesday morning after more rockets slammed into the Israeli border town of Sderot, lightly injuring two residents, the army said.
The army said the air strikes were against buildings or houses that were allegedly storing weapons.
Palestinian security officials said there were no injuries resulting from the attacks.
In a text message, the Hamas military wing said it fired 23 rockets on Monday, of which nine were aimed at Sderot. The most lethal attack killed an Israeli woman, the first Israeli death in the current round of fighting.
The 35-year-old woman was the first Israeli killed in a rocket attack since November.
The salvo came during a meeting in Sderot between Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Javier Solana, the European Union foreign policy chief. They were not harmed.
Late on Monday night Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert visited Sderot, his office said in a statement. It was Olmert's second visit in a week.
Angry Sderot residents called for Olmert's resignation, charging that the Israeli government has failed to protect them.
In the past week, dozens of rockets have fallen on the town, less than two kilometres (a mile) from Gaza.
During his late night visit, Olmert told residents he would remove bureaucratic obstacles and speed the process of reinforcing their homes to protect against the rockets.
On Tuesday many businesses in Sderot were closed and the streets were empty.
On Monday, an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at a car carrying four Islamic Jihad men, killing all of them. A spokesman for the group said they were targeted just after firing rockets into Israel.
Islamic Jihad, which has carried out hundreds of rocket attacks and suicide bombings in recent years, threatened "earthshaking" revenge.
