WOST + Ginette Claudette
“Presidente”
(Waxploitation Records / Numbers Only)
(Feb 12 release date)
Two years ago, Waxploitation Records signed a 16-year-old artist/producer in Venezuela named WOST.
At the time, he had been selling his library to other artist/producers via Soundcloud -- for $7. So that he could afford to buy his own $200 computer. The Los Angeles based label, best known for having developed/managed Gnarls Barkley and Danger Mouse, encouraged WOST to take his tracks offline, smuggled a computer to him via Colombia, and recommended he develop his craft only for himself.
Venezuela is a challenging place for everyone, let alone artists, especially emerging teenaged artist/producers.
Food and medicine shortages. Extended power outages, internet and phone blackouts. Political upheaval and violence. When the label would move WOST around Caracas for things, there was always the threat he could be forcibly conscripted into the army. And the more successful he became, the potential for kidnapping was loomed in the background.
He turned 18 last month, and his new single "Presidente" is maybe maybe going to be the Latin "Harlem Shake" courtesy of a fantastic vocal collaboration from the wildly brilliant Bronx native GINETTE CLAUDETTE. Originally, the single was slated to feature one of a number of highly recognizable vocalists, but when given an opportunity to be the wildcard, Ginette delivered the perfect performance. When she first heard the beat, it brought back memories of her Latin household and go-to Dominican house party jams like Oro Sólido’s “El beeper”. WOST and Ginette connected to bring an authentic, original, underdog anthem.
Zane Lowe has been an early supporter of single and will premiere the song on his globally influential Beats 1 show.
WOST had begun to make a name for himself, including collaborations with the Chicago rapper Rockie Fresh, the afrobeat group Gato Preto, and the UK grime legend Stush. His songs soundtracked The CHI (Showtime), Native Son (HBO), EA FIFA 20, and an Adidas film featuring Leo Messi, Paul Pogba, and Luis Suarez.
But this feels like WOST’s moment and a new moment for Ginette – to bring themselves, and bright musical cultures, to the world.
Lyrics:
El brillo, dinero (The shine, the money)
Tu sabes que los tengo (You know I have it)
Esta caliente (It’s hot)
En la calle con mi gente (In the street with my people)
’toy candente (I’m sizzling)
En la noche, yo no duermo (At night, I don’t sleep)
Dale prende, prende, yo soy diferente (Go ahead, turn it on, turn it on, I’m different)
Entiende, entiende, yo soy la patrona (Understand, understand, I’m the boss)
la Presidente la presidente x3 (The president, the president)
La la la presidente x4 (The, The, The president)
Yo soy la patrona (I’m the boss)
Ven Aqui Ven ahora (Come here, come now)
Yo lo hago yo sola (I do it alone)
Me llaman la doctora (They call me the doctor)
Yo soy la que mando (I’m the one that commands)
Siempre trabajando (Always working)
Sigo cantando (I keep singing)
Por por el brillo, Dinero (For the shine, the money)
Tu sabes que lo tengo x3 (You know I have it)
