The waterfalls near Gunlock Reservoir are a rare and beautiful sight. They only form when the reservoir reaches capacity and water flows over the spillway onto the red rocks below. Due to drought, it's been years since the waterfalls were last running. But due to our record-breaking winter, the falls have made a big comeback this spring.
I had the chance to spend last weekend at Gunlock State Park and enjoy the beauty of these falls up close and from the air. The water flowing over the vibrant, red rock is just amazing!
I visited with the park administrator a couple of times during my stay and he mentioned that the falls were likely at their maximum flow and would be that way for a couple more weeks. Then they'll begin to taper off. But there's still a lot of spring runoff coming, so you've got time to go experience this sight with your own eyes.
