IBT is proud to introduce its latest training module "Teaching Rule-Governed Behavior to Individuals with ASD". This training will discuss and review evidence-based procedures to teach rule-governed behavior to individuals with ASD, and look at several applications of one such procedure to teach rules relating to social skills and perspective taking skills. The training will also discuss other considerations for establishing independent rule following, including teaching flexibility with rule following, and observation skills to identify what rules apply to natural situations.
Many ABA intervention programs designed for individuals with ASD focus on the instruction of contingency-shaped behavior, meaning that behavior change occurs as a result of direct contact with contingencies such as reinforcement and extinction. While many skill targets may be effectively taught using traditional contingency -shaped learning strategies, individuals must learn to how and when to use these skills effectively within dynamic natural situations that are constantly changing. This requires individuals to learn and follow rules which help to guide the use of appropriate behavior in a variety of situations and contexts. As such, the acquisition of rule-governed behavior becomes increasingly important for individuals with ASD, in order to facilitate successful application of learned skills to natural situations, as well as to learn new behaviors and social norms in a more efficient and effective manner.
