I was incredibly excited for the new Civic Si. The new 11th-generation Honda Civic is a fabulous commuter, and taken in Touring guise is one of the finest rides in its segment. And in an automatic-dominated market, any enthusiast model clinging to manual gearbox — as the only available option, no less — seems cause for celebration. 

But where this latest Si seems to combine many of the right ingredients, it's as though someone forgot the buttermilk. At best, this Civic Si seems a half-measure meant to funnel shoppers up into the upcoming Integra; at worst, it will turn buyers to the VW GTI. Take a bite, and this batter proves flat.
