RESQ’s Rapid Response Team (RRT) Training Program is an integrated training program that covers wildlife ‘response and prevention’ verticals including ‘Technical Wildlife Rescue’ and ‘Human-Wildlife Conflict Response Management’ (HWCRM) for frontline forest officers in Maharashtra.
With rising human-wildlife interactions in Western Maharashtra, especially Leopard and Gaur-related, this program is designed to have intensive 5-day sessions wherein the officers are given core skills (practical) training of species-specific rescue techniques and taught safe rope access systems using the right equipment to conduct rescues on field. Also conducted are sessions on species-specific behaviour under stress, handling, basic stabilisation, first aid and correct methodology to transport and release different species of wildlife.
This week, we had the Kolhapur Forest Department attend the RRT program at the RESQ Wildlife TTC and Training Centre. They trained hard and sincerely from 9 am to 7 pm daily and are now equipped with skills and knowledge to use the right strategy and tools to provide respond to emergency aid for a wild animal in distress or prevent a human-wildlife interaction from turning into a conflict scenario.
Kudos to DFO Vishal Mali (Kolhapur Forest Department) for taking the initiative to ensure his field staff is well trained and to Wildlife RESQ-CT team members Tuhin Satarkar, Naresh Chandak, Sumedh Tarde, Abhishek Swami and Aniket Sayam for ensuring to transfer as much knowledge and skills possible during the course of the program.
A big thanks to Kiran Rahalkar and Wildlife Conservation Trust for conducting a session on ‘Wildlife Crime Scene Management for Field Officers’ during the course of the program at RESQ!
Here’s to prepping ahead for the challenges we are going to face together in the future - only stronger in numbers and skill!
Reducing human-wildlife conflict, together.
