This interview, with Rudolf Balogh, a solo violinist from Ózd, Hungary, was held during a break in the recording of folk music in Sáta.
Interviewer: Gergely Juhász

Excerpt:

GJ: How old were you when you started playing?
R: I was six. On a half-size violin, then a three-quarter.
GJ: Who did you get it from?
R: It was a gift, because I never knew my father. I was three and a half when he died. There were five of us children, I was an orphan.
GJ: In Ózd?
R: In Ózd.
GJ: Who taught you to play?
R: I learned by "listening in" a lot, and from the radio. We lived in the "Cipó" [loaf] district of the town, the young musicians went out to the cemetery hill to practise. I went there to "listen in", and learn. Sometimes I had enough money to pay a "freelancer" for a week or two. (GJ: This was what the Gypsy musicians in these parts called an unofficial private teacher another Gypsy musician who would coach them in return for a fee.)

JG: Hány évesen kezdtél el zenélni?
R: hat éves voltam. Feles hegedűn, majd háromnegyedesen
JG: Kitől kaptad?
R: Ajándékba, mert apámat nem is ismertem 3 és fél éves voltam mikor meghalt. Öten voltunk testvérek, árva gyerek voltam.
JG: Ott Ózdon?
R: Ott Ózdon.
JG: Kitől tanultál zenélni?
R: Úgy tanultam, hogy „hallgatóztam" sokat, rádióból is. A „Cipó"-ban laktunk, kimentek a fiatal zenészek a temetőhegyre ott gyakoroltak. Én ott „hallgatóztam", tanultam. Volt úgy hogy volt annyi pénzem, hogy egy-két hetet fizettem „maszeknak" (JG: a cigányzenészek itt így mondják a nem hivatalos magántanárt, azaz egy másik cigányzenésznek fizetett pénzt, hogy az tanítsa őt)
