As the region's academic health system, Health recently partnered with Cincinnati Fire Department to launch pulse point response, a free 911-integrated mobile app that alerts CPR-trained citizens of someone nearby having a sudden cardiac arrest.

If an emergency happens in a public place, the app will alert users in the vicinity of the need for CPR while an ambulance is on its way.

The app also directs these potential rescuers to the exact location of the nearest automated external defibrillator or A E D.

According to the American Heart Association, 40% of cardiac arrests occur in public settings of the 475,000 Americans that die from cardiac arrest each year, more than 350,000 occur outside of the hospital making it the leading cause of death in the United States.
