The Lewis and Clark Expedition was the United States’ expedition to cross the newly acquired western portion of the country. The expedition took place after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, where the U.S government purchased the territory of Lousiana from the French. Once the region was under U.S control, the purpose of the expedition was to explore the newly acquired territory, establish American control over the continent and to gather geographic knowledge of the region.
