STORYLINE
Residents of recaptured towns and villages in Ukraine's Kharkiv region are trying to put their lives back together after the withdrawal of Russian troops.
Russian forces left the war-scarred city of Izium last week as Kyiv's soldiers pressed a stunning advance that has reclaimed large swaths of territory in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region.
With the Russians gone, it is easier to assess the extent of devastation caused by intense fighting.
Locals feel safe enough to venture outside, praising the Ukrainians troops for coming to their rescue.
74-year-old resident Lubov Fedorivna was cooking on the street as she recalled her time under Russian occupation.
She said recent weeks had been especially difficult as many residents were running low on supplies.
The mayor of Izium, Valery Marchenko, said that about 70% of the city's high-rise buildings were damaged, and most areas of the city had no gas, electricity, or water supply.
Across Izium, there are signs that the Russians left in a hurry.
Equipment and weapons have been left behind, and whatever still works is being reclaimed by the Ukrainian forces.
