Being an authorized user on a credit card could help your credit scores - or hurt them. In this video, we look at how being an authorized user on a credit card works and how it might affect your credit scores. Here are five things to know about being an authorized user:
1. Being an authorized user means you can use someone else’s credit card in your name. You can make purchases and use the card as if it were your own, but you’re not the primary account holder.
2. To become an authorized user, you’ll need the primary account holder to add your name to their credit card account, giving you authorization to use it.
3. The credit card you’re an authorized user on will likely appear on your credit reports. This means that if the primary account holder misses a payment or carries a high balance on the card, it can impact your credit scores as well as theirs.
4. Alternatively, if the primary account holder makes on-time payments and keeps their balance low, your credit could improve over time.
5. If you want to become an authorized user on a credit card, choose someone who pays their bill on time and keeps their credit card balance low. Adding yourself to an account that’s in good standing can get you one step closer to better credit scores.
