During the Pinochet dictatorship (1973 - 1990) more than 3.000 people were killed and disappeared, and about 30.000 were victims of political prison and torture. Although today, Chile is slowly facing its past, a new right-of-centre government with ties to figures from the Pinochet-era has many relatives of the disappeared worried about the future.

Meanwhile, the reactivation of the National Commission on Political Prison and Torture; the recently inaugurated "Museum of Memory"; and the transformation of former concentration camps into "places of light" are some of the initiatives that Chilean society is taking to to heal its wounds.
