Katrina de Medici April 13, 1519 - January 5, 1589.
She was the wife of Henry II of France, and the mother of Francois II, Charles IX and Henry III of France, whom she had actually arrested and ruled the country on their behalf.
Katrina was the daughter of Lorenzo II, Duke of Urbino of Medici, the grandson of Lorenzo "the Magnificent" and of French Princess Madeline de la Torre of Auburn.
During Katrina de Medici's time, the religious wars in France began between Catholics and Huguenots. She tried to maneuver between the Catholic Gay House and the Bourbon House that supported the Huguenots, and feared the victory of one of the parties, which would have taken over France and the Crown. While detained on behalf of her son Charles IX, she attempted to reach a compromise with the Huguenots, who were granted some degree of religious tolerance (the Saint Germain Addict in January 1562 and the Embassy Agreement on March 19, 1563).
Katrina de Medici as patron of arts began the ballet tradition in the royal houses.
Katrina de Medici died in Blois Castle in the Loire Valley in January 1589 and was buried alongside her husband, King Henry II, in the Basilica of Saint-Denis near Paris. Only seven months later, her son, King Henry III, who was the last king of the Vello dynasty, was murdered.
