Mount St. Helens eruption. "Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it! This is it!" This was the last words that Volcanologist David Alexander Johnston transmitted back to the United States Geological Survey headquarters in Vancouver, Washington before the mountain's lateral blast swept him away from the ridge he was stationed. In the video, there is his last photo of him taken 13 hours before the event. After a intense search, Johnston's body has never been found. Highway workers did find remnants of his USGS trailer in 1993. Two volcano observatories were built and named after him. One is located at the ridge where he died and the other is located in Vancouver, Washington.
Harry R. Truman was another notable person who died that morning. He was a 83-year old American businessman, bootlegger, and prospector. He lived in a small cabin near Spirit Lake and was the owner and caretaker of the Mount St. Helens Lodge at Spirit Lake near the base of the mountain. Despite evacuation orders, Mr. Truman refused to leave his cabin he lived at for many years. The day before the blast, authorities tried on final time to persuade Truman to leave, but with no avail. On the morning of the eruption, Truman's cabin was overtaken by a pyroclastic flow and buried his cabin with 150 feet of volcanic debris. After the tragic event, Truman emerged as a folk hero for his resistance to evacuate.
Mt St. Helens is a Stratovolcano located in southwestern Washington in the Cascade Mountain Range. The mountain blasted a cloud of ash nearly twelve miles high that mixed with the jet stream and traveled to other countries. In the end, the eruption caused $1 billion worth of damage and destroyed the habitat in the area for years. The Toutle River was flooded with timber and other debris coming down the mountain.
Sadly, 55 other individuals perished that morning. Many were loggers working on a Sunday for extra money. If it was on a week day, then the death toll would be much higher.
Today, it's still an active volcano and in the early 2000's it began to release steam and develop a lava dome, but no big eruption occurred. #mtsthelens #eruption #mountain
