2021.11.08 — Ghiannis D (afternoon dive)
A very popular reef in the Red Sea is Abu Nuhas. The reef is home to 4 wrecks, which all sit next to each other: Ghiannis D, Carnatic, Marcus (Wreck of the Tiles), and Kimon M (Wreck of the Lentils).
There is some confusion about the number of wrecks and their names though. Marcus is also known as Chrisoula K, yet some (mistakingly) give that name to the Kimon M. Some also say the Kimon M is not the real Kimon M, but another wreck and the Kimon M lies deep in the sea. Above that an extra bow lies in front of the Marcus Wreck … is that the Kimon M?
Either way: our first dive was on Ghiannis D, a Greek cargo ship that hit Abu Nuhas in 1983. Legend has this was no accident, but a play to claim insurance money.
The Giannis D. sits at 27 meters, with the bow separated from the stern. Both lay on the port side and are covered with splendid soft corals, whereas the center section has collapsed.
As our boot was anchored near the Lagoon of Abu Nuhas, we had to get there by Zodiac.
You can find an entry point at the back of the stern to penetrate the wreck and enter the engine room. Because of the angle the wreck sits at, you can feel disoriented.
The bow of Giannis D. is cut off and bowed to its left side at a depth of 18 meters on its middle part but perfectly intact. There is a big mast in the center, and the anchor chain comes out through one of the two hawse holes.
The U-shaped winch that was a perfect safety-stop spot recently collapsed.
