(24 Dec 1976) The Lebanese made a determined effort to celebrate Christmas this year. The Middle East country, which has been gripped by a bitter civil war since April 1975, tried hard to forget its troubles. But though the major fighting was over, all was not completely calm. Since the Arab League organised ceasefire there has been intermittant fighting and Beirut, the shattered capital, was still suffering from a lack of power supplies during the holiday period.
