Surgery performed by Dr. Runge and his team at the University of Pennsylvania's Ryan Veterinary Hospital.
Minimally invasive surgery—which is increasingly used in human medicine but rarely in animal medicine—permits veterinary surgeons to operate without the need to cut or saw open a patient’s chest. This causes less trauma and post-operative pain, and allows for a faster recovery and return to function.
Small, pencil-size ports are placed into the patient, which enables the surgery team to use small cameras to see the affected area and miniaturized instruments to perform the procedure.
