China’s distant water fleet – by far the world’s largest – is rife with human rights abuses and illegal fishing, and targets endangered and protected marine life across the world’s ocean.
The Environmental Justice Foundation's recent investigation documents the vast extent of this fleet’s abuse and paints an alarming picture of what really happens on unmonitored vessels at sea. The horrific images and stories heard in this film highlight the overarching failure of the Chinese government to effectively control its distant-water fleet, but also reveal a wider international problem: the shocking lack of transparency across the sector.
To prevent these kind of abuses, and ensure all stakeholders have greater control over seafood supply chains, all nations must implement freely available, cost-effective transparency measures now.
